Trip Adviser named the two islands the best in Europe after polls from the Websites’ visitors. This is a great boost for the islands reputation and comes after a report showing the improvement over the last few years in visitor numbers. Changes such as RET and the Sunday ferry restrictions beinf lifted have all helped, but the rest is down to the sheer beauty of the islands and its people. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-26247865
Images taken just outside Tobermory Harbour by Tobermry photographer Sam Jones. The new ‘Mersey class’ boat is en-route to Leverborough on Harris on a three year trial. The boat is hoped to be replaced by a more up to date vessel in the future. The images also show the Harris boat towing the Tobermory boat in a series of exercises. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-17924370 for images
Ferry operator, Caledonian MacBrayne, has now started a Sunday service from Tarbert on the Isle of Harris. The Sunday ferry service is still a very controversial issue, with the Free Church and Lord’s day observance Society opposing its introduction . It has to be said that the Sunday service is also still controversial with others not involved with the church, but it has been shown quite clearly on Lewis that this service was needed and has been extremely popular since its inception. The Sunday ferry service also has the effect of linking Loch Maddy with Tarbert on Harris, ans allows visits to the communities over a weekend. For better or worse, the Sunday service now exists, but hopefully won’t spoil the special Sunday atmosphere of Lewis and Harris.
